Six Keys for Developing and Implementing a Successful Information Literacy Training Program
Library Services at the Australian Bureau of Statistics is recognised as an innovator in the field of information literacy training (the Research Skills Training Program developed and delivered by ABS Library Services won the ‘AGLIN Innovation Award 2006’ for combined cultural and technological initiative).
In the past three years the Research Skills Training Program has become a core function of Library Services and proven both popular and successful. The Program is delivered nationally and focuses on enhancing the research capabilities of ABS staff, encouraging a ‘working smarter’ philosophy. Integrated into the organisations' Capability Framework, the ABS executive recognises information literacy as a key capability and recommends all staff undertake Research Skills Training.
Research Skills Training provides participants with an opportunity to explore research services available in both the internal and external environments and develop research behaviours to undertake quality research. Various streams of training are offered to meet the information and technical needs of distinct client groups including researchers, management and senior executives. Prior to delivery, the training is customised to meet the specific information needs of clients which have been identified through liaison librarians.
This paper will focus on how Library Services at the ABS developed and implemented a successful information literacy training program within a corporate context, highlighting the six keys critical for success:
1. understanding your clients
2. endorsement from senior management
3. partnership with organisational learning
4. linkages to capabilities frameworks
5. reviewing the product
6. continuous improvement
