Talkin Together: Caboolture Shire Libraries Engaging with Aborginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities

  • Kerry Griffith, Caboolture Shire Council, Australia
  • Ms Gail Robinson, Consultant, Australia
  • Caboolture Shire Libraries is committed to improving equitable access to library services for local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The Shire has quite a high resident population of indigenous people and has in the past had difficulty reaching out to these communities.

To address this situation and improve the quality and diversity of services that the library has to offer local residents, Council applied for funding from the State Library of Queensland Strategic Development grant, and employed Gail Robinson, community consultant to assess and improve library engagement with our local Indigenous community.

This project had some special features including:

    · Whole of community approach (focus group meeting, Murri Network Liaison, one on one meetings with local elders and community representatives).
    · Support and active involvement from all 6 branch libraries in the development and implementation of the project and its outcomes
    · Assessment of services and spaces and the development of an action plan to address any barriers to access.
    · Signature projects that resulted from the project include
    - Improvements to collection,
    - Commissioning of Indigenous artwork for display in the central library,
    - Creation of an indigenous specific space in Central library,
    - Creation of culturally appropriate promotional material and staff training packages,
    - Development of a series of Indigenous workshops and educational programs to be delivered throughout all six libraries during 2008,
    - Improvements to systems, processes and community based partnerships to actively attract and engage with Indigenous communities.
