  • For some years now library and information professionals have been concerned about attracting dynamic people to the profession. The aging work force and a range of other issues impacting on the number of applications received for positions advertised in the library and information industry has increased the need to address workforce
planning for the industry. Research has been conducted within Australia and internationally and has provided the industry with an evidence base for address workforce planning.

In December 2006 a group of industry professional from a range of sectors meet in Melbourne to discuss strategies to address the shortage of qualified library and information professionals. This voluntary group, known as the 'Promoting Library Careers' group have developed a wiki aimed at promoting the profession to secondary students and their careers teachers. In addition the 'Promoting Library Careers' group have developed a range of strategies to assist in attracting people to the
    library and information industry.
